Reboots and Remakes: 5 movies we’re excited (and nervous about) in 2024

The world of cinema is no stranger to nostalgia, and 2024 is set to be a year filled with reboots and sequels that promise to take us down memory lane. From thrilling storm chases to spine-chilling horrors and beloved comedies, here are some reboots and remakes you may not have heard about, but might just find intriguing.

Twisters

Remember the 1996 classic Twister? It captured our hearts with an all-star cast including Helen Hunt (*Mad About You*), Bill Paxton (*Big Love*), Philip Seymour Hoffman (*Almost Famous*), Cary Elwes (*The Princess Bride*), and Sean Whalen (who seems to be in just about everything). This year, we get Twisters, a sequel that's vaguely associated with the original storm-chasing adventure.

The new film features Kieran Shipka (*The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina*), Glen Powell (*Scream Queens*), and Maura Tierney (*E.R.*), but it’s clear the cast doesn’t quite match the star power of the original. If big storm movies are your thing, Twisters might be worth checking out, though expectations should be tempered. Check it out here.

Final Destination: Bloodlines

The movie series that made us all paranoid about fate's deadly plans is getting a reboot. The original Final Destination starred Devon Sawa (who stole our hearts in Casper and Now & Then), Ali Larter, Sean William Scott, and Kerr Smith. This film taught us that fate can't be escaped, and its unique approach to horror left a lasting impression.

The reboot, Final Destination: Bloodlines, focuses on first responders and promises to be just as terrifying as the original. With a fresh cast and modern twist, this one is a must-watch for horror lovers and those nostalgic for a good scare.

The Naked Gun

Feeling a bit nervous about this one? You’re not alone. Seth MacFarlane is bringing back The Naked Gun. Thankfully, MacFarlane isn’t attempting to recreate the magic of Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin. Instead, the movie will pay homage to the Drebin lineage with Liam Neeson playing Frank Drebin Jr.

Neeson, known for his more serious roles, is an interesting choice given the comedic genius of Nielsen. We'll have to wait until 2025 to see just how this one plays out, but it's certainly a bold move that could either be a refreshing take or a complete misfire.

The Crow

Another reboot that could either soar or crash is the 2024 attempt at remaking the 1994 cult classic The Crow. Brandon Lee captivated us in the original adaptation, and we all mourned his tragic death on set due to the discharge of a prop gun that wasn't properly checked.

The new version stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven. While there's no recreating the magic of the original film, there’s hope that this new version brings its own twist to the story rather than trying to mimic the 1994 classic. Skarsgård's portrayal will be under intense scrutiny, but fans are cautiously optimistic. Check out the trailer and let us know in the comments: are you excited for the remake?

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

The beloved Beetlejuice is getting a reboot titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. With many of the original cast members returning to reprise their roles, and the addition of Jenna Ortega, this film has the potential to be a hit. However, the absence of Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin is understandable—they’ve aged in ways that ghosts simply can’t.

Rather than recasting their roles or using AI to make them appear younger, the movie opts to explain their absence. This decision could either be a wise one or a hard pill to swallow for fans who loved the original dynamic. The plot details are still under wraps, but we can expect more of the quirky, supernatural fun that made the original a classic.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is expected to hit theaters on October 11, 2024. The plot revolves around the continuation of the original story, with new characters and old favorites navigating the chaos that Beetlejuice brings to the living and the dead. Check out the trailer here.

Nostalgia is a powerful force, and these reboots and remakes are set to capitalize on our love for the movies of our youth. Whether they succeed in recapturing the magic or fall short, 2024 will be an interesting year for film enthusiasts. Stay tuned and keep an open mind—sometimes, revisiting old favorites with a new twist can be a delightful surprise.
