Midlife Remix: Redefining Careers and Hitting Shuffle on Work

As we navigate the new world that has emerged after COVID-19, many of us GenX women face a crucial decision: should we make a shift in our professional lives? The once-exciting job may now feel like a monotonous rerun of the popular TV show "E.R." But do not despair! Embarking on a career change can be just like unearthing a long-lost vinyl record, both daunting and invigorating.

As a Professional Life Coach, I am privileged to guide and support a remarkable group of women from the GenX generation. Their unwavering determination and courage is truly awe-inspiring as they navigate the daunting task of changing their course in the middle of their lives. Day after day, I witnessed their incredible resilience and fierce drive towards transformation. And today, I am honored to share with you just a glimpse into the powerful stories of these extraordinary individuals:

Martina: From Dance Floors to Corporate Training

With a commanding stage presence and years of experience as both a performer and dance instructor, Martina has long been a shining star in the world of performing arts and education. But when the pandemic struck, her journey took an unexpected turn. As schools shuttered and virtual learning became the new reality, Martina found herself caught in the middle of heated debates between parents and administrators over COVID protocols.

The constant struggle to adapt to ever-changing regulations, coupled with low pay and little recognition for her hard work, left her feeling burnt out. Despite this, Martina's love for dance endures, and she now sets her sights on a different path - instructional design for adults. Drawing on her extensive background in communication, instructional design, project management, and teaching expertise, she envisions a new role where she can inspire and educate adults across various industries, beyond the confines of traditional K-12 education.

Tara: Weaving New Paths

Tara's journey through the professional world is a rich tapestry, woven with diverse experiences and unexpected twists. Starting as a textile designer, she effortlessly transitioned to the real estate industry in early 2020, showcasing her innate adaptability and resilience. But just as she was getting into her stride, fate struck in the form of a global pandemic. As the real estate market took a nosedive, Tara refused to let this setback defeat her. Instead, she pivoted once again, this time becoming a flight attendant. Her sharp customer service skills and unflappable calmness made her stand out in this role, even earning her the highest scores in her training class.

However, despite the stability of her new job, Tara again found herself yearning for something more meaningful. The glamorous yet hectic life of flying at high altitudes didn't provide the balance she craved, nor did it fulfill her deep-seated desire to help others in a more impactful way. Thus, she set her sights on a career in customer success, where she hopes to use her exceptional problem-solving skills and genuine passion for helping people while achieving a healthier work-life balance. Through all of these shifts and changes, Tara remains determined to create a fulfilling career that aligns with her values and allows her to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

These valuable talents can often be seamlessly applied to different industries, paving the way for new opportunities and growth.

  2. Research and Network: Immerse yourself in the field that interests you. Participate in online events, become a member of LinkedIn groups and network with those who have insider knowledge.

  3. Craft Your Brand: Take the time to update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Showcase your unique journey and how each step has prepared you for your next exciting adventure. Let your experience and expertise shine through as you prepare for the next chapter of your career.

  4. Analyze the Financial Situation: It's important to be honest with yourself about potential reductions in salary. While it may be difficult to accept, it could ultimately lead to a better outcome in the long run.

  5. Embrace Lifelong Learning: Whether it's an interactive online course or a hands-on weekend workshop, continuously sharpen your skills and expand your knowledge for the exciting new role ahead. Make every opportunity to learn count, and elevate yourself to become a master in your field. Keep pushing your boundaries and embrace the endless possibilities that come with lifelong learning.

  6. Be Open to Starting Anew: Embrace the excitement and freshness of starting as a novice once more. It's an opportunity to expand your knowledge and experience new growth. Let go of any preconceived notions and embrace the unknown with open arms! You know Steve Perry would.

  7. Understanding the Why Behind Your Career Transition: Your 'why' is a radiant beacon, guiding you toward your aspirations and illuminating those inevitable moments of doubt where you may question your path. It acts as a compass, pointing you toward your goals and providing direction when uncertainty looms. It also helps you navigate those inevitable "WTF am I doing?" moments.

  8. Vision for the Future: Envision yourself dominating in your new role, surpassing all expectations and leaving a lasting impression. Hold onto this powerful image—it will fuel you and push you to excel.

  9. Skill Gap Analysis: Identify the gaps and find ways to bridge them. It's like the damn Rubik’s Cube; it might take time, but it will eventually come together.

  10. Embracing a Growth Mindset: Always keep in mind that everyone begins their journey somewhere. Embrace the chaos and uncertainty of being a beginner, for it is part of the process.

  11. Strategizing Your Move: Carefully map out your objectives and strategically plan your transition like a seasoned leader. Remember to be REALISTIC. Prepare contingency plans in case of any unexpected obstacles that may arise along the way.

  12. Conquering Obstacles and Overcoming Adversity: Challenges and setbacks will inevitably arise on your journey. Embrace your failures, find humor in your mistakes, and press forward with determination and resilience.

  13. Know When You’re Ready: Timing is key in a career transition. When you find the right moment, jump in with both feet.
