Cozy Date Night Ideas for a Romantic Night In

Couple cooking together on a date night in.

If you live anywhere in the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere, chances are you’re as sick of winter as I am. This year has been especially cold, wet, and snowy, making March the month when we start resenting the slush, salt stains, and the need for yet another layer of clothing. By now, skiing has lost its thrill, tobogganing isn’t as fun, and the appeal of leaving the house is at an all-time low. But romance doesn’t take a season off, and March is the perfect time for cozy and intimate date nights at home. Here are some of the best ideas for a romantic night in.

Paint Night at Home

Love those sip-and-paint nights at a bar but don’t want to brave the cold? You don’t have to pay $25 to prove your artistic skills haven’t improved since kindergarten. YouTube is full of free painting tutorials that guide you step by step, just like an in-person instructor. Order some canvases, paints, and a drop cloth via Instacart, pour yourself a drink, and enjoy an at-home painting session with your partner—no judgment, just fun.

DIY Wine or Hot Cocoa Tasting

Looking for the perfect drink to go with your paint night? Try a wine or hot cocoa tasting. Pick out a variety of wines and take turns rating them—blindfold optional for added fun. If you prefer non-alcoholic options, hot cocoa tasting is just as enjoyable (and the perfect excuse for an indulgent treat). For extra flair, try a variety pack like this one from Old Town Spice Shop to mix up your flavors.

Cooking Challenge Date Night

What’s more fun than cozying up to watch Chopped? Competing in your own cooking challenge! Each of you selects surprise ingredients for the other, then work together to create an exciting (and hopefully edible) meal. Want a safer option? Recreate a favorite dish from your go-to restaurant and enjoy the experience of cooking together. If you end the night full, happy, and still on speaking terms, you’ve nailed the perfect date.

Movie Theme Night

Can’t decide what to watch? Eliminate the debate with a themed movie night. Create a spinning wheel of different genres—horror, superhero, rom-coms—and let fate decide. Cozy up under a blanket, grab some popcorn, and let the movie marathon begin.

Book Club for Two

If you and your partner love reading, turn your night in into a mini book club. Pour some wine, turn on the fireplace (or the fireplace channel), and cozy up with a good book. Want to add a little spice? Pick a romance or thriller with a bit of an edge to make things even more interesting.

March might be cold, wet, and a little dreary, but it’s also the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy a cozy night in with your partner. Whether you’re sipping wine, cooking together, or getting lost in a movie marathon, these simple yet fun ideas will keep the romance alive—even when the weather outside is anything but inviting.
